5 Dragons Tournament (Battle Missions)

On Saturday 26th February 2011 The 5 Welsh stores took some of their best (and worst) gamers to the 5 Dragons tournament, which was held in Warhammer World (Nottingham). I would of course be representing Cardiff.

I have some pictures of the venue which i will upload when i can get the pictures off my camera so you'll have to wait for those blurry shots. Sadly i did not take pictures of the games, as we only had 1 1/2 hours time limit per game and i did not feel this would leave enough time to get enough pictures while still paying attention to my moves.

I have however recreated the games with Vassal and my third round opponent (who had a very nice camera and was an all round nice bloke) was taking pictures of his opponents armies and he has told me he will e-mail some shots of my army to me in the near future.

Before i post the games i will post up the list i took, so here goes!

HQ:
Eldrad (210)

Elites:
5 Fire Dragons (80)
Wave Serpent: Twin-linked scatter laser, shurican cannon, star engines (140)

5 Fire Dragons (80)
Wave Serpent: Twin-linked scatter laser, shurican cannon, spirit stones (135)

Troops:
5 Dire Avengers (60)
Wave Serpent: Twin-linked scatter laser, shurican cannon, spirit stones (135)

5 Dire Avengers (60)
Wave Serpent: Twin-linked scatter laser, shurican cannon, spirit stones (135)

3 Guardian Jetbikes: Shurican cannon (76)

Heavy Support:
Wraithlord: Scatter laser, shurican cannon, 2 flamers (120)

2 War Walkers: 4 Scatter lasers (120)

3 Dark Reapers: Exarch, crackshot, tempest missile launcher (147)

Total:
1498

The overall plan is to sit between 20"-30" away and lay down a blanket of fire with the scatter lasers, if in range the shurican cannon will join in too. Eldrad can cast double fortune on any two units that can get into cover. If i have to, one unit of FD (the one in the star engine serpent) will push forward to take out a vehicle while the other unit can hang back as an interceptor. The DA units won't get out unless forced to while the GJB squad uses JSJ to generally be annoying.
The wraithlord will act as a deterrent to any deep strike units i encounter while the reapers are there purely for their MEQ killing qualities, as in test games i found bringing down a unit with power armour quite difficult if my opponent refuses to roll lower than a 3.

Do you see any problems with this list? Anything that doesn't seem to fit at all? I know the Wraithlord looks out of place, but he has uses.

  1. Eldrad- great
Fire dragons- great, give both serpents spirit stones though, and tl eldar missile/single shuriken cannon. Exarch with tank hunters makes them still highly effective 6-12" if you can afford it
Dire avengers- great, but take bigger squads, with bladestorm (doomed bladestorm is horrific), in tl eldar missile/single shurkiken cannon/spirit stone serpents
    War walkers- great
Dark reapers- no need for a solo foot unit; they either hide out of LOS for tempest launcher in which case that 1 gun is 147pts, or in LOS for more damage but then every piece of anti-infantry power will come their way. Use the points for upgrades above
Jetbikes- Similar, but can be objective handy. If you have points left over, take them, otherwise don't bother.
Wraithlord- meh,I've seen them be very tough, good tarpit, but on the other hand he'd buy two war walkers. Playtest it.
    Good luck! :)
